It’s (as I’ve mentioned in the past) been a great year for Irish film, and (here I go again) it continues with Sensation starring Domhnall Gleeson (yes, he’s part of that Gleeson family).
A story that follows that life of Donal who is the sole heir to his fathers farm. After his father passes away, Donal finds himself flush with cash and in between keeping his mate Karl in pints, he hesitantly phones for the services of a prostitute called Kim (Luanne Gordon). From here the story takes the occasional influence from Pretty Woman. But this is no Julia Roberts rom com, it flaunts around the whole client / hooker relationship that was so prevalent in Pretty Woman. Anyway, Kim proposes a business plan to Donal and his recently acquired wealth which would see the two of them set up their own agency. And I’m not talking about a advertising agency either.
Sensation is quite a dark story with a rock solid performance by Gleeson who is entirely convincing as a rural savage, sorry young man. Besides the constant masturbation, there are genuine moments of something else bubbling away under the surface from his performance which keeps the audience intrigued and captivated. And as greasy a bloke as he is, there is something very charming about his character. You shouldn’t really like him, but you do. The supporting cast are also spot on with Luanne Gordon not missing a beat. Written and directed by Tom Hall, it moves at a decent pace and to Hall’s credit, like his cast, you are constantly engaged in a movie that twists and turns, in what  is a probable tale, but none the less quite bizarre. And the bizarreness of the story is a bit of a double edged sword. Depending on your sensibilities you might find the whole thing a bit too much and over the top. Almost unbelievable as it were. But!!! Stick with it and as bizarre as it might seem (to some) there is a happy ending, in more ways than one.
It’s hard to find fault with Sensation as it hammers home it’s twisted tale, although it could have done with a few more laughs. That said, Gleeson’s performance is heart warming, touching and incredibly captivating and Sensation is certainly a very decent watch!
