Magnolia acquire rights to Marley Documentary

Magnolia pictures have secured the American rights to Kevin McDonalds documentary about the legendary Reggae star in the new documentary “Marley”. McDonald has a good pedigree when it comes to documentaries having previously made “One Day in September” a film about the 1972 attack on Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics as well as the wonderful “Touching the Void” a story of two climbers in the Peruvian Andes. The film is the first about Marley to make use of private home recordings and son Ziggy claims “the documentary is the ultimate revelation of my fathers life”.

Bob Marley, is perhaps the best known Reggae artist of all time and one of those musicians whose legend continued to grow after his un-timely death in 1982. more than just a musician he was a political activist and a hero to the working classes and impoverished in his homeland of Jamaica. McDonald took over the directing duties about a year ago after Martin Scorsese withdrew from the project, which had been offered to him as a follow up to his “shine a light” movie about the rolling stones.

The world premier of this film will take place next Sunday the 12th of February at the Berlin Film Festival, so far as Magnolia are concerned the US premier will be in Texas this March at the SXSW Film Festival. For those of us unlucky enough to not have tickets to either event as the man himself would say “don’t worry about a thing because every little thing is going to be alright”, when the film goes on general release April 20th.
