The Dark Knight Rises DVD Review

Just in time for Christmas (and what a movie to watch over the holidays) Christopher Nolan’s thrilling conclusion to his Dark Knight Trilogy finally arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray.

On the incredibly slim possibility that you haven’t seen the movie, I’ll stick with the official synopsis so we don’t land a major spoiler blow to your brain!

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Picture wise (and we had a DVD copy), you are in for a treat, as you’d expect from any movie involving Christopher Nolan and the immensely talented DP Wally Pfister. Even on DVD, in standard definition there is a solid level of detail throughout with little detail lost in the shadows. And while it seems a little bit more saturated than the cinematic release (at least to my eyes) this is something that will not only impress you, but your mates and the granny who’s had one bottle too many of the cherry come Christmas day. Same goes for the audio (and yes there is the directors commentary to boot) track as the epic Hans Zimmer movie scores fills your living room, and expect your surround speakers to get a serious workout as Gotham comes to life in 5.1

The only downside to the DVD is the extras. Basically, you get one extra, and that being an 8 minute featurette with a few brief interviews with the likes of Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale. However the extras list on the Blu-Ray is fantastic. Jam packed with features, the full list you can find below. Overall, The Dark Knight Rises is an essential purchase for Christmas!
