Minions Review

SHARE:

Arguably, the best thing about the Despicable Me movies have and always will be the Minions! The little yellow bastards provided all of the big laughs and it was always inevitable that their lovability, not to mention their marketability would see them get their own big screen outing.
Once Minions gets going it's disappointing, to say the least. And seems to serve as nothing but a cash in, and considering the huge amount of tie-ins and adverts that are peddling everything from Happy Meals to Sun-cream, this is plain to see.

The biggest problem with Minions is the actual story. It spans millions of years, from the time dinosaurs trampled around the earth, right up to 1968 New York City.  This is an origin story and follows the Minions ambition to serve the most evil master they can find. From a T-Rex to some of history's more unsavoury characters, they eventually find themselves serving Scarlett Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). A convoluted plot of having the aforementioned super villain become Queen of England sees the Minions in a spot of bother. And that's just with the plot. For an amount of time the story just meanders, going nowhere quick and seems quite pointless. In fact, your little ones may find themselves a little bored.

However, Minions does bring the laughs and while the Minions seemed to have devolved their language a bit (they seem to have even more English in this movie, than the Despicable Me movies) they do bring the funny from time to time. There are a nice few visual gags, but the whole Brits drinking tea continuously is overdone to the point of boredom. Once would have been enough. But again, as great as these visual gags are, a handful is all that available to the audience, which again seems to highlight the cash in factor.

While the story is weak and hobbled together in about 5 minutes, the visuals themselves are nothing short of stunning. Especially in the latter half where they almost take on a hyper realistic look.

As awesome as the Minions are, they are not strong enough to hold a movie for 90 minutes. Yes, they're funny and super cute, but they really needed a meaty story to be a huge success. And no doubt, Minions will be a huge success. An established franchise, with cutesy characters and a truck load of marketing tie-ins will make a shit tonne of money.

Ultimately, from a movie point of view, Minions is a half missed opportunity. Will it keep your little ones quiet for 90 minutes? Yes, in between occasional bouts of laughter and as the Summer holidays kick off, this is one movie that you will see one way or the other. Amazing visuals and the occasional laugh out loud gag is just enough for you to forgive the poor story. Minions is worth a punt!
