Colin Trevorrow Confirmed For Star Wars: Episode IX

While we’re all waiting with baited breath for JJ Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Disney and Lucasfilm have their eyes on the future of the saga, and to that end they have announced the director, at D23 of course, who will take the helm of 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX, the conclusion of the new trilogy that begins this December. You may heard of him. His latest movie features Chris Pratt versus dinosaurs, and is currently the third highest grossing movie of all time. I am of course talking about Colin Trevorrow.

There have been rumblings of Trevorrow taking on the project for a while now, and the official press release of his announcement suggests Disney had his eye on him for sometime, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy saying, ‘Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed. The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled film maker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.” The enormous amount of good will with studios that Jurassic World has garnered for the director was always going to pay off big time, and I can’t think of anything bigger than directing a Star Wars movie.

While production on the movie won’t begin for a few years, Trevorrow will be heading to Lucasfilm later this year to begin working with artists and his fellow Star Wars directors, including Abrams and Episode VIII’s Rian Johnson, on bringing his of the saga to life. The enormity of this project doesn’t seem to be lost on the director, with the following statement perfectly capturing what it means to be handed the keys to the Star Wars kingdom: “This is not a job or an assignment. It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftpeople. we’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generations because they deserve what we all had - a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas has instilled in all of us: boundless creativity and hope.”

What has gotten us most excited about The Force Awakens is Abrams approach to the project. It’s full of reverence and awe for what Star Wars means to so many people. Trevorrow seems to echo that, and I can’t think of a better person for the job. What do you think? Sound off below.
