No Escape Review

While one can excuse Pierce Brosnan in an action movie (of sorts), OWEN FUCKING WILSON on the other hand? Excuse me while my brain explodes.

An American Family setting up their new overseas home find themselves in a large dollop of bother as they get caught up in the middle of a coup, which sees foreigners killed on sight by death squads.

So Owen Wilson must save his family. Tragically, you won't care less as you try and figure out how an actor who crashed weddings and lent his voice to animated cars ended up in a role like this. Wilson isn't a bad actor by any means. He knows his craft and is always likeable in any comedy he does. But in No Escape, it's mind boggling to think that a casting director thought he'd be good for this role.

Maybe Wilson was talking to Liam Neeson who advised him that they're is good money to be made in these "bang bang" movies. While Neeson has the look and the demeanour to pull it off, Wilson unfortunately doesn't. And while his performance here won't set the world on fire, he just seems completely wrong for the role. I get the idea, to a point. He's your average Joe, tasked with doing some un-average Joe stuff. That's all well and good, but hurling your kids off the roof of a building to save their lives just parks reality right into the wall.

Pierce Brosnan, as a mercenary no less, dials this one in from the moon and probably would break more of a sweat having a shit. Lake Bell, while more at home in Wet Hot American Summer, is a bit more watchable, but again seems completely miscast.

Besides a few set pieces, which offer little to excite or entertain, No Escape is a prime example of WTF. Completely miscast and with a story full of drivel that offers nothing for cinema going audiences. If you find yourself in dire need of some Owen Wilson, go watch Wedding Crashers. However, if you find yourself wondering just what the fuck is wrong with Hollywood, by all means lap up this pile of junk.
