10 Cloverfield Lane Review

Look, before you get your hopes up, this reviewer won't be spoiling Bad Robot's latest, surprise offering. Nope, no way. So from a plot perspective all you're getting is the plot synopsis which reads

"After getting in a car accident, a woman is held in a shelter with two men, who claim the outside world is affected by a widespread chemical attack."

The woman is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and the men are played by John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. And what a cast this is. Gallagher Jr is sublimely likeable here and delivers a performance far removed from anything he's done before (we're not even going to mention Jonah Hex) and audiences will have no trouble connecting with him. In fact, you'll connect more with these characters and potentially feel for them more than anything else you'll see this year. Winstead gives a career best outing as she goes through multiple shifts in her performance and does an incredible job of pulling you into this world. However, it's John Goodman that will blow your jaw right off. We know the big man can act, but this is a tour de force of acting on display here. It's the best performance he's ever given and that's saying something.

No matter what else I'll say about 10 Cloverfield Lane, Goodman's performance is worth the price of admission alone. Visually, the movie lends itself quite well to a very cluster phobic piece of entertainment. Small sets, dim lights and incredible dollops of tension. This will definitely have you on the edge of your seat on multiple occasions.

However, it's not all good. And when I say it's not all good, it's not that it's bad, it's just Hollywood being Hollywood. In the movie's finale there are a number of points for a perfect cut to black, roll credits. But no, Hollywood must be fucking Hollywood and turn on the cheese. And once Hollywood has finished being Hollywood, it decides to smash it's head off a few bricks, grab a power up and become Super Hollywood and provide one of the most "For Fuck Sake" endings in recent memory.

That said, 10 Cloverfield Lane is an acting masterclass from John Goodman, has got a terrific sound mix that will knock you on your ass and is generally entertaining from beginning the end. Misfiring ending aside, this is definitely a great piece of entertainment! Check it out!!
