Films inspired by YA dystopian fiction


Teenage dystopian fiction has been a popular source of inspiration for Hollywood in recent years, choosing novels with a proven track record and an established fan base has arguably been the defining cinematic trend of the last decade.
Based on the best selling trilogy written by Veronica Roth, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, is the latest film release whose roots lay in YA fiction.
Read on as we take a look at some of the other popular movies in this genre.
  1. The Maze Runner (2014)
Based on the book of the same name by James Dashner, The Maze Runner, follows the story of Thomas, a 16-year-old boy who wakes up in a large grassy area called the Glade.  Enclosed by tall, stone walls and populated only by other teenage boys, Thomas quickly learns that they're all trapped in a maze and he must join the team of "runners" to have any chance of escape. Starring Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Aml Ameen and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.
  1. The Hunger Games (2012)
Inspired by the hit YA fiction series written by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, are a cruel punishment on the citizens of Panem by the elite inhabitants of the Capitol for a past rebellion. Every district must send two teenage tributes to fight to the death in a televised spectacular. When her younger sister Primose is initially chosen, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to fight in her place. Starring; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.  

  1. The Giver (2014)
A 1993 American young-adult dystopian novel by Lois Lowry, set In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice. Released on the silver screen in 2014, the story follows Jonas, a teenage boy who feels different from his friends. When he is assigned to be the Receiver of Memories, he is trained by The Giver and learns the true pain and pleasure of the "real" world. Starring; Brenton Thwaites, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Taylor Swift.

  1. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)
Based on the first of six YA fantasy novels by Cassandra Clare, the film adaptation The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was released in 2013. Set in contemporary New York City, Clary Fray, an until-this-point normal teenager, discovers she is the descendant of a line of half-angel warriors who protect the world from demons. When her mother disappears she must join the Shadowhunters and enter the Shadow World filled with deadly creatures. Starring; Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Lena Headey and Aidan Turner.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant is showing in cinemas across Ireland now.
