Logan Review

The selection of Wolverine movies that Hollywood have churned out over the years have been more miss than hit. It was only in 2013 in James Mangold's The Wolverine that any essence of the character was truly captured and even then it felt incredibly restrained. Yes, the latter X-Men movies had a crack off it, but they really concentrated more on Magneto and Xavier with heavy sprinklings of the Adamantium one, with both Fassbender and McAvoy putting in stellar performances.

Let me say this! And this really is all you need to read! Wolverine fans, this is the movie you have waited your entire fucking life for. This is what you get when a director is given complete freedom to do what he wants. Make no mistake about it, not only did James Mangold make the best Wolverine movie ever, he's made one of the best movies of the year. And he also got a career best performance from Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman.

From the opening scene, the tone and mood are set. This is an intense, brooding, gritty, f-bomb laden, gory swan song for Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine. With the exception of Deadpool before it, never before has a movie captured the absolute tone of a character as well as this. It is truly epic.

In the not so distant future, Logan is caring for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by people you wouldn't exactly invite for dinner things take a another turn for Logan. Plot wise, this is nothing spectacular or complicated. But it is very solid, especially in its delivery, bar a few pacing issues which make the movie seem slightly longer than it actually is.

Jackman gives it his all here as does Patrick Stewart. And while they have been playing these characters for quite some time now, this is their best outing. These performances are stellar stuff. Stephen Merchant and Richard E. Grant are also rather damn good here, but it's relative newcomer Dafne Keen who will knock your socks off as Laura. It's just a shame that we didn't get a tiny bit more of Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce.

And expect your socks to be knocked off quite a bit. In fact, bring a few extra pairs. Not since Hit Girl in Kick-Ass has a young character made such an impression. The action set pieces are grounded in brutal and blood filled reality as all manner of body parts go flying. This is the real Wolverine in action here. And he's bloody terrifying.

Minor pacing gripes aside, this is just brutally epic. A fitting swan song for Jackman and the character. It's just a shame that the rest of the Wolverine movies have not got this level of tone and intensity. Miss this at your peril!
