Have Some Major Roles In Spider-Man: Homecoming Been Revealed?

SHARE:

With movie hitting our screen next Summer, details of Spider-Man: Homecoming have been understandably kept tightly under wraps. Up until now that is. Two major casting rumours have recently dropped, and of course the Internet is becoming unhinged with all the speculation. First up, courtesy of The Wrap, comes word of the casting of Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s one true love, previously played by Kirsten Dunst. The article claims that Disney Channel star Zendaya, whose involvement in the movie was announced way back in March, has been cast in the role of M.J.. She was previously announced as a character named Michelle, but The Wrap says this was a red herring to lead up to a reveal of her true identity at the end of the movie, pretty much in the same way Paramount and JJ Abrams wanted to do with Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. This turn of events was something that has been speculated amongst fans for a while now (I even speculated as much  when Zendaya was first announced), but with Marvel having yet to confirm this turn of events, it shouldn’t be taken as golden just yet. Of course, this hasn’t stopped the Internet from doing what the Internet does when diversity rears its head in major comic book movie franchises. I seriously thought we were over this.

Not long after that nugget of information hit the web, a Reddit user leaked what appears to be a call sheet from the movie that supposedly  reveals some of the characters that will be joining Tom Holland’s Spidey on the big screen.

While Zendaya is still listed as Michelle, several other classic Spider-Man characters may have been confirmed, including The grand Budapest Hotel’s Tony Revolori as Peter’s Bully, and number one Spider-Man fan, Flash Thompson, Laura Harrier (The Last Five Years, 4th Man Out) as Liz Allen, future wife of Harry Osborn, and The Nice Guy’s Angourie Rice as Betty Brandt, previously played by Elizabeth Banks in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Kenneth Choi, no stranger to the MCU having played World War II solider Jim Morita in Captain America: The First Avenger, is billed as Principal Morita, possibly playing his own character’s grandson. Two intriguing castings come in the form of Fargo’s Bookeem Woodbine and Hop’s Tiffany Espensen. Woodbine is credited as ‘Shultz/Shocker #2’, who can only be Herman Schultz, the costumed, energy blasting villain Shocker. It looks like the rumoured trifecta of villains, which already includes Michael Keaton’s Vulture and Michael Chernus’ Tinkerer, may have found it’s third member. I'm just intrigued by him billed as ‘Shocker #2’, could there be more than one. Espensen, on the other hand, is credited as Cindy, who could just be a random student in Peter’s high school. She could also be Cindy Moon, a relatively new addition to the Marvel Universe and a recipient of a bite from the same spider who gave Peter his powers. As Silk, she has pretty much the same powers as Spider-Man, though to a much more powerful degree. With a stacked cast, if Silk does appear, it is conceivable she may have a small role in proceedings leading to a bigger impact down the line. Of course, all these castings should be taken with a pinch of salt until they are officially confirmed.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set for release July 7th 2017.
