What The Hell Is Going On In Transformers: The Last Knight?

After a brief detour with 13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, Michael Bay is currently playing in the Hasbro toy box once more with filming currently ongoing with Transformers: The Last Knight, due to hit screens next Summer. Over the last few months, little bits and pieces of information have trickled out and the first few pieces of information were to be expected. Of course, Optimus Prime and Megatron would once again be knocking the robotic tar out of each other, with the returning human contingent being filled out by Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and, coming back after a one movie hiatus, Josh DuHamel and Tyrese Gibson, alongside newcomers Isabela Moner, Jerrod Carmichael, Laura Haddock, and Anthony Hopkins. The usual Autobot faces are making an appearance, with Bumblebee, Hound, and Drift all making a return, with new faces including Squeeks, a new tousling machine that looks like the lovechild between Johnny Five and the aliens from Batteries Not Included, and Hot Rod, his first appearance on the big screen since the original, animated Transformers: The Movie from 30 years ago (lets hope they get Judd Nelson to reprise the voice, he’s not up to much these days). So far, everything seemed business as usual. Then it started to get weird.

The story had been kept tightly under wraps, and still has, but little tidbits started to leak out, suggesting that the legend of King Arthur  would be playing a role in the story. Ok, a bit weird, but sci-fi properties mixing in existing legends into their own mythology isn’t anything new. This was confirmed when Liam Garrigan was cast in the role of the legendary British leader, strange in itself since the actor is most famous for playing the exact same role in t.v. show Once Upon a Time. So the Arthurian legend will be getting an injection of giant transforming robots, including mini-Dinobots as revealed by Wahlberg in a Facebook Q&A. What other crazy things does the script by Matt Holloway, Art Marcum, and Ken Nolan have ins true for us? Well, what about Nazis?

As reported by The Sun, war veterans were furious when recently film crews hit Blenhiem Palace in Oxfordshire, the birthplace of Winston Churchill. The fact that they were there was the cause of the outrage, it was because the historic building was dressed as a Swastika draped headquarters for Adolf Hitler, with extras dressed as Nazi soldiers and German tanks also spotted on set. This is seen as highly disrespectful to the memory of the famed military leader, especially when you consider he is actually buried less than a mile away. Speaking to the BBC (via EW), Bay sought to clear up the controversy, saying:

“I just want to say, people were not fortunate enough to read the script, and they don’t know that Churchill in this movie is a big hero. And Churchill would be smiling about Last Knight. They haven’t seen the movie, they don’t know the ending, and they don’t know how Churchill is a hero in this movie. So, as the staff said, ‘He’d be smiling right now.’”

He also added that he meant no disrespect to military veterans, and when you consider some of his movies, you get the feeling he means it:

“When you see the movie, you’ll understand. I for one, probably more than any director in the world, have shot more veterans and more active military men and women in my movies. I would do nothing to disrespect veterans.”

Controversy aside, now Winston Churchill will have a role in this movie!!?? Gotta be Hopkins, right?Of course, it’ll probably be some time till we hear concrete information regarding The Last Knight’s story. But there is a lot of plates spinning here. King Arthur, World War II, mini-Dinobots (coming to a toy store near you!!!), Autobots, Deceptions. Even if you’re not a fan of Bay’s Transformers movies, you gotta admit you want to see this movie to see how it all comes together.

Transformer: The Last Knight is set for release June 23rd 2017.
